tools of the trade

I was asked today about my cameras, lenses etc.......and I tried to explain to the questioner that equipment simply doesnt interest me but they just didnt get it!! My cameras are tools of the trade...I tend to use what I need....and if thats the hassleblad or the Nikon, then so be it....however camera gear doesnt excite or interest me atall its simply a tool of the trade in which I work. There s an old saying amongst anglers, "some of those lures are designed to catch anglers and not fish......meaning that the glitzy shiny new lures are more designed to appeal to the anglers in the shop than the fish in the water...and the same could definitely be said of camera equipment judging by the page loads of gear I saw in a mag this week.....most of which the average "photographer" has no need for...let alone know how to use :)
Well all the above aside...i do have a bit of a love affair with my little Leica and my 60 year old wooden field camera is a rather special thing. However please dont expect me to talk shop about cameras as all you will get is a yawn and sent in the direction of a salesman who can probably see an amateur photographer coming at 100 yards!!!

unable to think for yourself? Then just copy someone who's better........

just a reminder to those who once again seem to have no idea of how to be their own person and who think that copying someone else in everything they do in their business is the only way forward......It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation
............And boy are you failing fast my dear!!!!

Lens For Sale

Here we have a rather lovely lens for sale. Its been our pool spare for the last 12 months but the time has come for it to go to a new home as its really not getting enough use as a spare (we already have another in almost full time use and a second one if we need it).
Its been lightly used, maybe about 200 frames max.....never abused or knocked or dropped. The carrying trunk is like new, as is the lens......the hood has some very minor blemishes and there is just one tiny tiny scratch on the outer barrel. Optic is perfect.
If you know this lens then you know its a nearly £4000 lens. We are selling it for £3250 ovno.

dangerous job!

Well the job at Opočno has gone well, but i am amazed at the stupidity (or maybe naievity) of some of the other photographers. It seems that some of them are "press" photographers and are not aware of how to photograph falconry or of the intrinsic danger they are in, whilst photographing the eagles. I even saw one guy lying on the floor taking shots whilst an eagle was being flown on a deer.....for a few minutes we all thought he was in serious danger but luckily the eagle turned in time. It really makes me wonder if there should be some sort of checks on the photographers......I have many years experience as both a falconer myself and of working at field meets such as this...but others are wanabees and weekend warriors or simply come from a different photographic discipline and really should learn about the dangerous environment of being around large eagles before venturing out.!!

long days and longer nights!

Well the Opočno festival is well underway..........the weather is is hot and there are great thermals for the soaring birds. Today was the balloon sky trial and at 50metres it was an impressive sight.
The evening session starts at 6pm and judging by previous years...will continue right through to breakfast time, so if you are going to phone me on my mobile this week, dont expect to get too much sense out of me!! Some of the pix will appear on line once I am home but the rest are due for publication early 2009 in the fieldsports press....watch this space for more details.
